How to rank for the practice area, not just your firm name
#rank for practice area not firm name#pain-guide

If someone already knows your firm's name, Google will usually find you. That's not a strategy. That's a business card.

The search that pays is the one a stranger types when they have a case and don't have a lawyer yet. "Motorcycle accident lawyer." "DUI attorney [city]." "Wage claim lawyer near me."

Most firms win the first kind of search and lose the second. Then they wonder why the site is busy and intake isn't.

Branded rank is identity. Practice-area rank is demand.

Google has an easy job with your name. There's one obvious entity. Your homepage, your listings, your partners.

An unbranded case term is a fight. Every firm in the market wants it. Directories want it. Lead-gen sites want to rent it back to you. Google has to pick who is actually about that matter, in that place, with enough proof to send a person who needs help today.

If you only have a homepage and a blog, you have asked Google to use a business card as a practice-area page. It won't.

What has to exist before you can rank

A real URL for the matter. Not a paragraph on the homepage. A page whose title, heading, body, and schema are about that practice and, if you serve a city, that city.

A reason to believe you do this work. Case types, process, who it's for, what happens after the call. Reviews that mention the matter help more than generic five-star poetry.

A local footprint that matches. Google Business Profile categories, service areas, photos, and posts should agree with the page. If the profile says general practice and the page says catastrophic injury, you're arguing with yourself.

A site that can be crawled and converted. Fast, indexable, phone and form tracked. Rankings that dump into a page nobody calls are how you get traffic without cases.

None of that's a trick. It's the minimum surface area for the query.

Pick the term that produces a case, not a trophy

"Lawyer" is a vanity fight. "Personal injury lawyer" is a war in most metros. "Motorcycle accident lawyer" is a case.

We took The Law Center to #2 nationally for "motorcycle accident lawyer" in six months. That term is personal injury. It's specific. It's what a person types after a crash, not what a firm types into a brainstorm.

Start with the matters you want more of. Then look at where you already sit in positions 5 to 20. Those Strike Zone terms are the cheapest wins you will get. Push those before you invent a content calendar.

If a term is unwinnable in your market this year, say so and pick the local or long-tail version. Honesty here saves a year of invoices.

One page, one matter, one place

The template that fails: one "Practice Areas" dump with eight H2s and a form.

Google can't pick a winner from a pile. The searcher can't either.

Build:

  • `/motorcycle-accident-lawyer/` or `/motorcycle-accident-lawyer-houston/`
  • A unique page for each city you can actually appear in court for
  • Internal links from related case pages and from the homepage, like a firm that has a point of view, not a directory

Don't clone the same 400 words and swap the city name. Thin location pages are how you lose both rankings and trust.

Authority isn't a blog cadence

Legal is a YMYL topic. Google's bar is experience, expertise, and trust. A weekly post that restates the statute doesn't clear it. A page written like someone who has taken these cases, with a real attorney involved, does.

Cite the work you can stand behind. If you have results, use them. If you don't have a national #2, don't invent one. Local proof, specific process, and clean reviews beat a fabricated trophy.

The open-source method we use for the ranking loop is in seo-kit. The legal-specific work is still the pages, the map pack, and the tracking.

Local is half the battle

A lot of practice-area demand is "near me." That result is a map, not a blog.

Categories, reviews, photos, and response time on the profile will move more case calls than another explainer post. A smaller firm can beat a bigger one in the map pack because the big firm treats the profile like a listing, not a channel.

If you run ads on the same terms, don't let paid and organic land on different stories. The query is the brief. Paid won't fix a page that can't take the case.

Buyers are also asking AI

The stranger with a case isn't only on Google. They ask ChatGPT which lawyer to call. If you only exist as a branded homepage, the model has nothing to cite for the matter.

The page that ranks for the practice area is also the page an answer engine can quote. See how to get cited when someone asks AI for a lawyer. Same asset. Two retrieval systems.

What we do on a teardown

We map the case terms you should own, where you rank now, and whether the page can close. We look at who holds the map pack. We tell you if the market is winnable before you commit a dollar.

Focused SEO and reputation work starts around $3,500 a month. Integrated programs across SEO, content, and paid typically run $5,000 to $10,000. The price follows the competition, not the size of the letterhead.

FAQ

Why does my law firm only rank for its name?

Google already knows who you are. It does not yet trust you for the unbranded case term. That usually means you have no real practice-area page, the page is thin, or stronger firms own the local and national results for that matter. Branded rank is identity. Practice-area rank is earned.

How do I rank for personal injury lawyer in my city?

You need a page built for that matter and that market, a Google Business Profile that matches, reviews that mention the work, and enough authority that Google will show you instead of the incumbents. National terms take longer. Local and long-tail case terms move first.

How long does it take to rank for a practice-area keyword?

Local and specific case terms often move in three to six months. The most competitive national terms take longer. The Law Center reached #2 nationally for motorcycle accident lawyer in six months. That is a hard term, and it is not the default timeline for every market.

Do I need a separate page for every practice area?

Yes, for every matter and location you actually want to rank for. One homepage cannot win 'DUI lawyer' and 'custody attorney' and 'estate planning' in the same city. Google has to land the searcher on a page that is clearly about that case.

Is ranking nationally realistic for a smaller firm?

Sometimes, on a specific case term, if the page and the authority are real. More often the winnable fight is local and long-tail. A smaller firm that owns the city and the map pack will beat a national rank it cannot defend. Pick the term that produces cases, not the one that looks impressive in a slide.
